Charge controllers, who needs them? Optimizing MPPT for Energy Harvesting Applications
In the world of energy harvesting, many sources, such as solar, TEG, and piezoelectric devices, are commercially available over a wide range of different power levels, from microwatts to kilowatts. Each requires some output impedance control to maximize the power collected. If you are designing a system, you might wonder, how do I connect a harvester to my device? In many, but not all, cases, you will need a charge controller. This talk will cover different charge controller types, from pulse-width modulation (PWM) to maximum power point tracking (MPPT) to direct charging, and how they work. The talk will also highlight differences between types of charge controllers that fall under the M...

Powering The IoT Edge - It's All About Efficiency Webinar

Power efficiency should be a simple metric to measure. It’s essentially the ratio of output power to input power. However, that’s the only thing that’s simple. IoT really needs some explanation when you’re designing a product, with caveats for product category, power level, operating environment, technology that’s employed, and so on. As an engineer, how do you do an apples-to-apples comparison...

    I am looking for some solar panels for my daughter in a difficult application. They will be indoors and facing windows that have a sort of cross hatch window frame. I realize that the the output will be dramatically reduced due to the glass but my main concern is if it will be essentially zero with the cross hatch frame. On the crystal silicon obviously the output goes super low with partial shade. There is a point of what might be zero output on the amorphous panel. Is that from the shade of the stick or something else?

    • @PowerFilmSolarEnergy
      @PowerFilmSolarEnergy Год назад

      Harry, in both cases, the shade will reduce the overall output, but amorphous will frequently fair far better. Do you know how much power you need to generate for your application? With this in mind, we can determine if we have a panel that could create that with perfect conditions and then move on to the shading issues you've mentioned. Please email us at info@powerfilmsolar.com, and we will help you walk through the options. Thanks!

    How would 50 Watts Silicon compare to a 30 Watts Amorphous? I'm looking at the 30w and they are somewhat bigger but can still be in the window as the 50 watt silicon I already have. The question is what is the best choice to get some power, we have very dark winters in Denmark, and there is not much direct light as I only have the West side windows. The 30 watt panels from you seems to be the biggest I can have in my windows. I can have 2 in total if it works.

    • @PowerFilmSolarEnergy
      @PowerFilmSolarEnergy 2 года назад

      Thanks so much for your comment. It's tough to say the exact results of a 50W crystalline silicon panel vs a 30W amorphous silicon panel without testing, but if shade was a factor the 30W panel will most likely fair well. As for your use case of putting the solar panel in a window, we don't recommend using our foldable panels this way. While you will be able to charge some, the amount will be dramatically reduced by the glass. Here's a blog post that talks about this exact topic: blog.powerfilmsolar.com/education/the-horizon-blog/2019/04/26/will-a-solar-panel-work-behind-glass

    My lightsaver max just wont turn off the charging lamps even after two days. Is this normal? It drains 2A via usbC until it charged 18000mAh then it constantly draws 240mA from the charger and doesnt stop. Is this a bug/failure? Shouldn't the charging fully stop and the status lightbar turn itselt off completly after the battery is full? I hope it wont overcharge itself

      @@electronicmusclebikethanks so much for the feedback. I completely understand where you are coming from with the wattage point. We don't lead with wattage because for this particular product our main focus is the charge time. It sounds like you have a lot of experience in the solar industry which is awesome! Please don't hesitate to reach out if you need anything at all.

    I have a max one and am VERY pleased with it. Thanks for the work guys. One negative are the cords of those end caps. They tangle with the rubber straps if i want to pack it up. Would been great if those endcaps would have been attached as a one big gummy flap that was not loose but fixed firmly with the case like gummy flaps on cameras or other accessories But besides that, a great product. Are you coming out with a version 2.0?
